When to start beginner piano lessons

When is the right time to begin piano lesson? Honestly speaking anytime is the right time for beginner piano lessons. Of course children have advantages over adults. Research shows that children between the ages of two to three years old are at their peak of creativity and independent thinking and they possess this until they reach school going age. This period may be a good time to enroll them to music appreciation classes and thereafter into beginner piano lessons.

To determine whether your child is ready to start beginner piano lessons, ask yourself these questions:

  • Does he/she enjoy listening to music on the radio?
  • Does he/she dance to the rhythm of music?
  • When near a piano does your child tinkle with the keyboard and enjoys the sound he/she is creating?
  • Does he/she stop for a moment when he/she hears a favorite tune?

In order to know if your child is ready for beginner piano lessons, take him/her for trial piano lesson. By observing his/her interaction at class, you can see for yourself if he/she is in tune to start beginner piano lesson. Usually the piano teacher would also give his/her opinion on whether your child is ready to pursue piano lesson. You can also discuss on the path you would like your child to take upon piano lesson enrollment. So once you have decided on a music school/private teacher, just ask if there is any trial lesson available.

Group lesson verses private piano lesson

Enrolling your child in group lessons could be a good start especially for the very young between three to four years old as the lessons are usually focused on music appreciation skills. As he/she progresses in the group lessons you can decide based on progress results whether private piano lesson is the next step for your child.

Ultimately private piano lessons is the way to go for someone who hopes to play and learn at one's pace. What makes playing the piano different from other instrument is that the piano can be played solo as it provides both melody and accompaniment capabilities. It sounds complete just by itself. Whereas you will find the woodwind, brass, string or percussion instruments usually performing as a group in order to achieve a more ‘full’ and balanced sound/music.
